Taking steps against fraud

Published: 12 December 2008 in Credit Cards

Consumers should take care to follow the simple steps of making sure that when they use a credit card they are in control of it to decrease the risk of becoming a victim of fraud, one sector commentator has claimed.

Danny Harrison, card fraud expert at The CPP Group Plc, said that people should keep their card in sight and that should they be in a restaurant they carry it to the terminal themselves, rather than allowing a member of the staff to do it.

He added that they may also wish to consider whether or not to leave a credit card behind a bar for a tab as an alternative may be paying in cash.

"It is making sure that wherever you use it, it is kept in sight or it is a trusted website you are using," Mr Harrison explained.

According to figures released in October 2008 by APACS, the UK payments association, total card fraud losses increased by 14 per cent in the six months to June 2008 compared with the first half of 2007.
