Holidaymakers planning to rely on their debit or credit card when they enjoy an overseas getaway this year should take care to ensure that they do not become a target for fraudsters.
A spokesperson for APACS warned that card loses through fraud occurring abroad have increased in recent years, as the plastic can be used in countries that do not employ the chip and pin method of security.
She added that the card could even be being used overseas when its owner was in the UK and that consumers should be aware that the details on their plastic would be valuable to fraudsters.
"The bottom line for all customers is, as well as making sure your credit card company has the correct contact details, it's the advice when you are using your card anywhere ... keep your pin safe," the representative explained.
According to APACS fraud statistics for January to June 2008, plastic card fraud losses were up 14 per cent to £301.7 million in first six months of last year, of which more than 40 per cent was the result of fraud abroad.
