Saving more money has been given as a top new year's resolution by almost half of British consumers, according to the findings of new research.
The survey, conducted by the Association British Insurers (ABI), revealed that 47 per cent of people aim to put more of their cash to one side in 2009, while 51 per cent admitted that the current economic climate had made it more likely that they would be resolved to save more.
Now the ABI is calling on the government to take action in helping people to change their savings behaviour for the better.
Director general Stephen Haddrill said: "Our research shows that many people in Britain want to save more for the future - it's good news that even in this difficult economic climate, public attitudes are shifting towards saving."
Meanwhile, a recent survey by the news agency Adfero found that 59 per cent of respondents believed the UK's economic situation would get worse in 2009.
