Credit Cards - "No respite" in use of cheques

Published: 23 September 2008
There appears to be no respite in the fall in use of cheques as a method of payment, one sector commentator has claimed.
In news that may be of interest to those using a credit card to carry out financial transactions, a spokesperson for HSBC said there was still a "strong core" of people who preferred to use cheques and many retailers who continued to accept them.
However, he noted that the use of such a method had fallen in the last two decades.
"In 1990 there were something like 11 million cheques being written every day. By 2008 it's just under five million per day at the moment. If you project that on the next five years it is likely to be 2.5 million per day by 2016," the representative explained.
People seeking a new credit card may also be interested to hear that plastic cards accounted for 65 per cent of all UK retail spending last year.
