Debt consolidation 'may be advised'

Published: 13 November 2008 in Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation may be advisable for Britons who are struggling to make ends meet during the credit crunch, with one sector commentator claiming that individuals could contact debt advice charities.

Francis Walker, spokesperson from Credit Action, said Britons could seek financial recommendations from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service or Citizens Advice if they are concerned about the state of their monetary affairs.

She also claimed that now was the time for households to start carefully budgeting.

"It is quite useful to just do simple things like keep a money diary for a week even and just write down everything you spend and then you can perhaps see where you can save," Ms Walker noted.

She concluded that Britons needed to get into a culture of managing their finances better.

According to Credit Action, total consumer credit lending to individuals at the end of August 2008 was £232 billion.

This has increased 6.8 per cent in the last 12 months and £10.6 billion in the first eight months of 2008.
