Universities and colleges in the UK are generally maintaining a strong financial position despite the ongoing economic downturn, one sector commentator has claimed.
Roger Grinyer, head of corporate communications at the Higher Education Funding Council for England, explained that it would "certainly be very misleading" to suggest there was a crisis in higher education.
He added that demand from students was still buoyant and that the institutions were coping well financially.
"There are undoubtedly challenges to be faced over the coming years but higher education is well placed to respond to these and to contribute fully to helping minimise the impact of the economic downturn," Mr Grinyer explained.
According to a press release by the University of Leeds, the institution's costs are rising sharply, while all income streams are under some level of threat.
Furthermore, in recent years, universities have benefited from rising tuition fees and growth in student numbers, but this will not be the case over the next few years.
