Debt concerns 'mounting'

Published: 30 December 2008 in Debt Consolidation

The number of calls to the government-funded National Debtline has increased by more than 40 per cent in a year, as Britons' concerns for their finances amid the credit crunch and an impending recession rise, it has been reported.

While in 2007, the average number of calls received by the helpline stood at some 16,000 a month, this November the figure stood at 23,000.

And during the same period, demand for business debt advice doubled, while calls from Britons requesting advice for being in arrears on mortgage or secured loan repayments rose by 30 per cent.

The National Debtline claims that it has helped 90,000 people so far this year.

Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas said: "It is imperative that when people are struggling with debt, they seek assistance as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, research compiled by reallyworried.com has revealed that the average Briton now spends two-and-a-quarter hours a day worrying - with one of the top concerns being the cost of living.
