Blame the parents

Published: 2 January 2009 in Debt Consolidation

When it comes to splashing out at the January sales, Britons should look to their parents as the reason behind their spending habits, it has been claimed.

According to Skipton Building Society, more than four out of ten UK adults admit that they choose luxuries similar to those of their parents and grandparents, while they also spend a similar amount.

And the biggest family influence was found to be mum, with 24 per cent of respondents claiming their spending habits were similar to their mother's, suggesting this was one aspect they had inherited from her.

Meanwhile, 15 per cent claimed they were more financially similar to their fathers, while two per cent said their monetary management mimicked their grandparents.

Dr Liz Mitchell, from Consultant Clinical Psychologist on Harley Street, said: "Wouldn't it be great to think we could blame our parents for our rather large credit card bills and tendency to splash out on everything from holidays to new cars."

However, she added that varying factors were at play when it came to spending, including the age of the consumer.

Meanwhile, moneysupermarket.com has revealed that 42 per cent of gym members will continue to pay their subscription this year, despite being unable to afford it.
