Brits 'should consider hotels'

Published: 30 September 2008 in New Mortgages

Although Britons are typically stuck in their ways when it comes to the housing market, they may wish to instead consider having an extended stay in a hotel, one sector commentator has claimed.

In news that may be of interest to those on the hunt for a new mortgage, Lorne Spicer - a journalist and financial expert who has appeared on various BBC television shows including Car Booty, Cash in the Attic and Money Spinners - said there was nothing new about living in such accommodation.

"Now we know that renting can be as expensive - and in some cases in the country more expensive - than home ownership. It's a third arm, a third option," she explained.

Ms Spicer noted that this was particularly the case for households who had seen their grown-up children moving back in following a divorce, or those in their 20s who could not afford a deposit on a home.

Those looking for a new mortgage may also be interested to hear that Hotels.com's Hotel Price Index 2008 found that the average price of a UK hotel room per night in 2007 was £106 – up 12 per cent from the previous year.
