In news that may be of interest to those on the hunt for a new mortgage, Lorne Spicer - a journalist and financial expert who has appeared on various BBC television shows including Car Booty, Cash in the Attic and Money Spinners - said there was nothing new about living in such accommodation.
"Now we know that renting can be as expensive - and in some cases in the country more expensive - than home ownership. It's a third arm, a third option," she explained.
Ms Spicer noted that this was particularly the case for households who had seen their grown-up children moving back in following a divorce, or those in their 20s who could not afford a deposit on a home.
