Government 'not doing enough' to guarantee savings

Published: 2 October 2008 in Unsecured Loans

The majority of Britons believe the government is not doing enough to secure their personal savings.

In news that may be of interest to those seeking unsecured loans, a poll conducted in recent days by the news agency Adfero found that only 28 per cent of those surveyed felt a new pledge to guarantee £50,000 per person, per bank was satisfactory.

Gordon Brown recently announced that officials would increase the limit on savings guarantees from £35,000 to £50,000, but 72 per cent of respondents were still worried.

The protection of bank deposits has become a key public concern after the government was forced to nationalise two mortgage lenders this year - Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley.

Meanwhile, those looking for unsecured loans may also be interested to hear that the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, has criticised the recent decision, after his party called for 'cast iron assurances' that no depositors would lose out.
